Synchronized classic Doctor Who in 2011

Tom Baker - Doctor Who: Meglos

The lag between the UK and US release dates of classic Doctor Who DVDs has been a “prickly” issue for North American collectors lo these many years.  Well, good news… we’ve finally gotten ourselves organized!  Beginning with Meglos this January, we will release most new Who DVDs the day after they come out in the UK.  (Please do not be distressed by the thorny image of Tom Baker here. This is actually Meglos himself, a crafty xerophyte who attempts to impersonate the Doctor with hilarious results.) “Hang on!” I hear some of you say. What about the backlog from this year? What about The Dominators? Time and the Rani?  The Seeds of Doom? All will be slotted in as we progress through the year, usually in months in which there is only a single new title coming out in our territories. Does that mean there will be classic Doctor Who every month? Yes!  Probably. For those who wish to keep absolutely up to the minute on all this, the man with the plan tweets all at classicdw.

    Righty-O. Good Show.

  2. UKTVFan says:

Good news. Glad to see BBC Video actually making an attempt to make products available to purchase in the US very soon after UK release.

So why is it so hard for BBC America to give us current UK comedies and dramas (like Doctor Who, Sarah Jane, Spooks, Merlin, Luther, My Family, Outnumbered, etc.) within a week of their UK debut? BBC America currently has ONE DRAMA, NO COMEDIES, TONS OF REALITY and TONS OF STAR TREK in primetime — how pathetic for a channel with “BBC” in its name.

Hopefully an international BBC iPlayer really is coming within the next 12 months so US lovers of quality UK television can legally watch their favorite shows in a timely manner. I’ll gladly subscribe to an international BBC iPlayer AND continue purchasing DVDs from BBC Video to support the BBC.

Wanna really see a spike in sales? Start broadcasting the classics, too!

  5. FarmCity says:

    Excellent news! Thanks BBC America.

Now, how about getting DARKPLACE released on DVD for the US?

  6. I need UKTV in HD says:

    I agree with UKTVFan.

@UKTVFan amen to your entire comment

  9. Noiralot says:

I agree completely with UKTVFan and would have no problem paying for an international BBC iPlayer. Star Trek re-runs? This is not why I tune into the BBC. When I think of BBC I think of shows that push the envelope not regurgitated reality TV and American Sci-Fi. Rockin Rich you are on point as well.

When is the Revisitations 1 set coming out for R1? I need it in my life!

  11. Paul says:

Classic Doctor Who on DVD in the U.S. — YES!, about time we got the good stuff from the U.K. BBC how about putting out Blake’s 7 & Tripods on DVD or at least show them on BBC America. More comedies – My hero, My Family and many more from your great history. I love Star Trek but it is on everywhere and it is not a BBC program.

  12. Susan says:

    I agree,
I can do without the multipule showings of Ramseys kitchen nightmsres. Really!Star Trek ! Which I can watch on 2 local channels here. Come on BBC you must have loads of classics in that vault. How about showing them?

  13. roses9 says:

    How about classics like DangerMan?

  14. Deitra says:

All right BBC America once upon a time you used to be great what happened ,now you just show crap(except for Doctor Who) still one good show is not good enough. Star Treck is not British! even if there is a British actor in it. More classics more comedies I adore British humor, hey why not even show some kids shows you have some good ones

Sounds like a great product. It would probably be a great gift for grandma at Christmas time

  16. Rob says:

I’d like to know when they are going to make DVD’s of William Hartnell’s The Reign Of Terror Planet Of Giants The Tenth Planet The Sensorites . Patrich Troughton’s The Ice Warriors The Krotons . Jon Pertwee’s The Ambassadors Of Death The Mind Of Evil The Daemons The Day Of The Daleks Death To The Daleks . Tom Baker’s Terror Of The Zygons The Face Of Evil Nightmare Of Eden Shada . Sylvester McCoy’s The Happiness Patrol Dragonfire The Greatest Show In The Galaxy . I’ve Asked BBC America And Other Websites And Never Got An Answer. If Anyone Else Can Answer That Please Leave A Post

Wow that was strange. I just wrote an extremely long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyways, just wanted to say fantastic blog!

  18. Jamie says:

How about releasing box sets of each season. I like the Baker and Pertwee years.

I am not a big fan of the new Who but I do watch it.

  19. Lori says:

    I agree with Jamie.
Huge Doctor Who fan, but I would rather have boxed sets of the each of the seasons/series in my collection from each Doctor than individual DVDs with only parts; I get confused and am less likely to purchase them this way.

PLEASE consider boxed sets of the Classic Doctors! PLEASE!

  20. Happy says:
