Stepping Up Releases of MI-5

MI-5

We were cheered last year when Richard Armitage joined the cast of MI-5 for Series Seven, but as we’ve seen over and over again at MI5, spying is a very dangerous business (who knew?), often ending in the expiration of our favorite characters. Now that we’ve examined the production dossiers from Season Eight, we can make one guarantee: Richard Armitage appears in all eight episodes. In one he’s seen running past the O2 (formerly known as the Millennium Dome) — very 007 (as in The World Is Not Enough). As Season Eight opens, the longest serving member of the team, Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) has disappeared.  The search for him uncovers conspiracies involving Iraq, the CIA, MI6 and perhaps even former colleague Ruth Evershed (Nicola Walker). Ruth first appeared in Season Two, but left for Cyprus four years ago to start a new life, or so she said.  MI-5: Volume 8 comes out early next year, and rather than waiting until January 2012, we plan to release MI-5: Volume 9, currently airing on BBC in the UK, sometime next summer.

What does this mean? this is confusing. When is V8 out and when is v9 out?

  2. Stephanie Farrell says:

excellent decision- can’t wait to see Series 8 AND 9. An outstanding series thank you!

I’m so happy to hear that you won’t be holding back the future MI-5 DVD’s for seasons 8 and 9. Can’t wait to see them. My local PBS television channel is currently showing season 8. MI-5 is the best television series ever shown on either side of the pond…thanx for keeping us posted too.

  4. Carroll Coleman says:

Was the decision to remove MI-5 (Spooks) from the BBCA schedule political, or due to poor ratings? Its untimely disappearance seemed to coincide with episodes that may have been offensive to some American viewers.

  5. Roy M. White says:

I will be waiting with bated breath for the MI5 Series 8 to come out. I have the rest of them and both my wife and I have really enjoyed the shows. Keep up the great work that you have been doing. As Sir Winston would have said “Keep buggering on”. Cherrio luv.

  6. Jeeves says:

Love MI5! I too have all the episodes.

  7. Mike! says:

Excellent BBC! I just finished watching Season 8 here in Las Vegas on PBS and that has to be the BEST SEASON EVER! This show gets better with age! I have been a loyal fan since season 1 with Tom and Danny! I only wish that we had better access to the BBC’s Spooks site to watch their previews of episodes. Its region restricted which I think sucks! Spooks/MI-5 is one of my favorites!!! Cant wait til summer 2011 for the new seasons DVD set!

  8. Penelope says:

I’d like to cheer this, but why on earth did it take so long to release the earlier titles anyway? Season 8 is coming out in January and it’s been on DVD in the UK for ages – my sister just bought it so I can watch it over there at Christmas. And when they are released here, the pricing is horrible. People at BBC America, this is NOT how you build a franchise.

  9. Bucky says:

It does seem a shame that the US will be “just” getting season eight as the UK will be releasing season nine. I have never bought the US releases of the show because the pricing compared to the UK release is OUTRAGEOUS. Our PBS station made it all the way to the end of season five before cycling back around to season one. I’m envious of the PBS station that is already showing season eight. BBC America cannot show MI-5 without cutting it to ribbons to allow for their commercial breaks. They take a 59 minute episode and edited it to 42 minutes. Terrible. Keep MI-5 on PBS and watch it as it was meant to be shown.

  10. ElizaG says:

I’m so grateful that a network (PBS) finally decided to show MI-5 straight through, season to season, and with episodes in sequence. Other networks have buthered the series.

  11. Bobbie says:

I have been totally enthralled with MI-5….actually I cannot get enough of it….It’s “streamed” through Netflix, which is wonderful for my husband & I because our PBS station (Pittsburgh, PA) does not carry it.
There is no series on American television that can even come close to the fine-tuned character development and “edge-of-your-seat” suspense offered in BBC’s production of MI-5 (actually, I find most BBC suspense, political espionage & mystery television productions far superior to American productions in similar genres). It’s just so frustrating having to wait months & months before new MI-5
seasons are released to Netflix or other “venues” (same goes for Torchwood episodes). I suppose the “good things come to those who wait” phrase rules the day.
Does anyone know why many BBC television productions are not “streamed” or even available through Netflix (i.e., Touching Evil”, “The Sandbaggers” “Wallander”*, “Inspector Lynley”*, “Prime Suspect”*)? *These shows are on DVD and available only through the mail*. Just curious.

  12. Terry Darakjy says:

Been waiting soooo long for Volume 8 and glad to know 9 will follow in rapid succession. This show translates so well on an international level.Keep churning it out guys. You definitely have a captive audience with this one.Love Harry & Roz characters especially.

  13. Shelley G says:

I love this program, it is a terrible shame however that parts of the story are cut out to place in mindless commercials, I was so pleased to see that PBS shows the programs in their entirity.

  14. Shelley Gray says:

I love this program, it is a shame it is edited for commercials but now comes the wait for series nine to be shown in North America. Come on BBC lets have it you cannot leave us hanging this long.

  15. Lyn S says:

I don’t know the idiot(s)? responsible for U.S. programming, but they are certainly responsible for numerous potential (like me) viewers to frequent media stores to buy Seasons of our favorite shows! I am frustrated, and irratated at having my favorite shows buffeted about, relying on the CONSUMER to figure out which episode, from what season we MIGHT get to watch!! I live in the East Coast market and am sick and tired of getting up at 3-4am to catch the ONE and ONLY broadcast etc…..And am currently looking to just buy the DVD s for this show, as well as for 4-5 other shows and skip BBC
    America altogether!

    A fed-up former viewer!

  16. JANICE says:

I AM JUST A POOR AMERICAN CITIZEN WHO NEEDS MI-5 STREAMING VIDEO! IF I COULD OWN THEM ALL I WOULD BUT THEM, ESPECIALLY THE BEGINNINGS W/ARCHIE. PLEASE FIND IT IN YOUR HEART TO RELEASE SOME EPISODES TO STREAM TO WATCH ON OUR LAPTOPS – PLEASE – PLEASE – PLEASE.
    MI-5 SUPER FREAK FAN, jan.

  17. Michael says:

Hope to be able to buy Series 9 on DVD sooner than Comcast’s BBC channel HD begins airing it.

  18. Dale L says:

My husband and I just finished MI-5 Vol 8 on Netflix and we CANNOT wait for Vol 9 to come out. Glad to hear it’ll be this summer and we won’t have to wait till Jan 2012! Our local PBS station (San Francisco) does not carry the series so we have been following the whole series via Netflix dvd’s and streaming.
This is THE BEST series ever – you just never know who will get knocked off regardless of how big a star – it puts all those U.S. shows to shame! I LOVED Tom, Danny, Adam and so very sad to see the end of Roz!

  19. BJ says:

Wow! Brilliant! Season 8 left my heart pounding!
Thanks to Netflix for supplying USA with access to this highly polished series. I’m looking forward to season, just wish it was available now!

  20. BETH says:

It took me over a year to get Season 8. Which I just received beginning of Feb. 2011. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I can’t stand waiting for it to come to the US. PLEASE release V9 it has been a long winter here and would love to see what happened.

  21. tg says:

I too love this show. And I sure wish it could be seen sooner in the United States.

    Thank you, you wonderful Brits.!!!!

  22. Spookster says:

MI-5 (Spooks) is the best TV series ever made. Am a huge fan and can’t wait for Series 9.

  23. hybouquet says:

The Boston PBS station just completed Series 8, but has not commented on when or even whether they will run Series 9. Let’s hope BBC America goes thru with its promise to release 9 on DVD this summer so it can be streamed thru Netflix.

  24. califoniacitizen says:

I bought Volumes 1 through 8 and really look forward to Volume 9. I have had to tell my self not to get attached to any of the characters as they are often killed off. So, I can live with that, but if Harry ever goes, I am gone. There has to be at least ONE thing we can count on.
So glad they brought Ruth back–she was always one of my favorites.

    Very, very well done series.

  25. SemperVigilo says:

We’re trying to keep everyone updated via our [spooks] Facebook page, so if you haven’t already clicked over there, here you go: http://www.facebook.com/MI5not9to5

  26. SpyWatcher says:

Love this series! Watched S7 and S8 on PBS…sure helps with my 24 withdrawl…am trying to buy earlier seasons…glad to hear about Netflex, Thanks.

  27. SpyWatcher says:

OMG! Just found Season 9 is on PBS at 3am MON! Why so buried? Someone just doesn’t know how great it is!

  28. Hooked says:

I am waiting impatiently for Season 9. When is it available?

  29. Oregonbob says:

Just watched Volume 9, and it was as exciting as the rest. Now my wife is wondering what is going to happen as the series appears to have reached an end with Harry apparently going to get the sack – or? Is there a 10 out there?
