Doctor Who: New Doctor

After a one-off attempt to revive Doctor Who in 1996, it seemed as if the good Doctor would be "lost in space" forever. Enter Russell T. Davies, creator of the ground-breaking Queer as Folk, which featured, among others, a Doctor Who-obsessed character based, just a little, on Russell himself. The rest, fortunately, is time-travel nirvana. Played by Christopher Eccleston in its premiere season in 2005, the new Doctor firmly reestablished his Time-lordship in the person of David Tennant over the following three seasons and numerous specials. Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith made his debut in Spring 2010.

Series One - Roaming the galaxy in his time/space ship, the TARDIS, the Doctor is a champion of good against the forces of evil. Christopher Eccleston's Doctor is wise and funny, cheeky and brave. An alien and a loner, his detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world is in danger. His new assistant is Rose (Billie Piper), a shop-girl from the present day. From the moment they meet, the Doctor and Rose are soul-mates; they understand and complement each other. In Series 1, as they travel together through time, encountering new and old adversaries, the Doctor shows her things beyond imagination. She starts out as an innocent, unfettered by worldly concerns. But she ends up an adventurer who, by the end of the series, can never go home again...

Series Two - David Tennant steps into the role of the Doctor for Series 2, and is proving to be the most popular Time Lord to date. David's Doctor is full of restless energy, he's also quirky, mischievous, charming and stylish, and the rapport between him and his feisty assistant Rose is stronger than ever. In Series 2, they meet Queen Victoria, an evil race of Cat Women and the dreaded Cybermen; the foundations are laid for the spin-off series Torchwood; but by the end of the series Rose finds herself parted from the Doctor for ever.

Series Three - Series 3 finds the Doctor with a smart, sassy and sexy new assistant, medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), whom he meets when her present-day London hospital is transported to the moon. Their adventures include meeting William Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in Elizabethan London, a nightmarish underground world of gridlocked cars and the return of the Doctor's sworn enemies, the Daleks.

Series Four - Go fourth and enjoy! The new Doctor Who returns for a fourth season with a familiar face. In the BAFTA® - and Hugo Award-winning series, Catherine Tate (Big Train, Bleak House) reprises her role as Donna Noble from the 2006 Christmas Special. Now reunited, the tenth Doctor (David Tennant, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Donna travel back to Pompeii in 79 A.D. to investigate a series of grisly murders on the eve of the infamous eruption. Look for previous companions Rose Tyler (Billie Piper, Mansfield Park) and the feisty Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman, Torchwood). Includes many extras.

The Complete Specials - This stunning collection of Doctor Who specials - The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars and The End of Time, Part One & Two - is a must own for all Doctor Who fans.
The four imaginative, action-packed specials are the farewell to star David Tennant, and Russell T Davies, the mastermind behind the rebirth of the modern Doctor Who. The specials culminate in the dramatic regeneration of the Doctor, giving fans their first glimpse of the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith.
The specials are packed with a terrific lineup of guest stars including Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman), David Morrissey (State of Play, Sense and Sensibility), Lindsay Duncan (Alice in Wonderland (2010), Rome, Under the Tuscan Sun) and many more!

Series Five: Matt Smith and Karen Gillan star as the new Doctor and his companion as Doctor Who returns. After his explosive regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor awakes to discover his TARDIS is about to crash! After falling from the sky, he pulls himself out of the wreckage to come face-to-face with young Amy Pond. Still wearing the remains of the Tenth Doctor's suit, ripped and raggedy from the damage after the TARDIS control room exploded, the Doctor promises to take Amy to the stars. But before they can begin their journey, they become embroiled in an alien plot that could destroy the Earth! Later the Doctor makes good his promise, and Amy boards the regenerated TARDIS, ready to take to the stars on a series of wild adventures that will change her life.

Series SixThe Doctor returns, alongside newlyweds Amy and Rory, to face monsters and mysteries and adventures all across time and space. Together they find themselves in Sixties America, battling the invasion the world forgot, then journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard a pirate ship, to solve the mystery of the Siren. In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor meets an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident takes on a terrible human shape. And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon's Run, and the Doctor's darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord's soul? Only two things are certain. Silence will fall. And a good man is going to die...

Series Seven: Matt Smith returns for his third series as the Eleventh Doctor. Fourteen big, blockbuster-movie episodes - each a brand new epic adventure featuring new monsters and some familiar foes as you’ve never seen them before. The first part of this series sees the Ponds (Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) return for their final voyage with The Doctor. They save a spaceship full of dinosaurs, don Stetsons in the Wild Wild West and are even kidnapped by the Doctor's oldest foe. But when they arrive in Manhattan the Weeping Angels are waiting for them - will The Doctor really lose Amy and Rory forever? Cast Quotes
Christopher Eccleston (The Doctor, Series 1): "What's dawned on me about Doctor Who is that I'm trying to entertain a different audience. It's exciting and funny and scary and it's aimed at families, so I'm kind of acting for children and I feel very lucky to be able to do that. For all the danger the Doctor encounters, the basic message of the show is seize life, be optimistic and see the positives.

"The series is written with passion and humor, and there's an innocence about it. It's a kind of celebration of life in all its forms. In everything the Doctor does he saying 'it's great to be alive'. I can hear people sneering at that, but that's what he believes and it's a nice thing to say to kids, or anybody for that matter."

Season Two - David Tennant steps into the role of the Doctor for Series 2, and is proving to be the most popular Time Lord to date. Interviews:
Matt Smith on playing the Doctor:

"People ask me, 'Who do you think your Doctor is?'" says Smith, in an interview with E Jane Dickson, "and I'm reluctant to think of it in those terms, because it's still a work in progress.

"Steven Moffat - who's just the most brilliant writer - told me when I first met him that the interesting thing, the defining thing, about the Doctor is that he never quite knows what's going to come out of his mouth in any given situation. His thoughts just combust spontaneously. I've tried to harness that brain-to-mouth rapidity.

"I mean, you could think about it forever, but how do you play the most charismatic man in the universe? It's a real challenge. If you play him consciously charismatic, he instantly loses the charisma. Of course, really charismatic people don't have to do a thing. They just are. I'm still finding my way on that one, but I like to think it gives me something creative to play with." - Radio Times blog

Smith on the tone of the new season:
"I think our series very certainly gets quite dark, in quite a magical way. But with the tone of the new series, they turn it into more of a fairy tale. Steven Moffat, one of the great TV writers, is just a genius and he plays with time and color and he's so brilliant in the way that he layers the themes on top of one another. I think fans are going to be quite excited about the direction we take things." - Techland Time
