Doctor Who: The Jon Pertwee Years

As Doctor Who moved into the Seventies it did so for the first time in color and with a new actor at the helm. Best known for radio's comedy hit The Navy Lark, Jon Pertwee plays the most flamboyant and dandified Doctor, with a droll sense of humor and elegant if inconsistent good manners. Pertwee's Doctor is truly an extension of the actor, a lover of adventure and gadgetry. This was incorporated into the show, turning the character into a real man of action, a sort of interplanetary James Bond, an exponent of martial arts and fencing who also boasted his own version of the famous Aston Martin in the shape of the Whomobile, a flying saucer-like car that actually flew. An exile on Earth, Pertwee's Doctor spent the majority of his time seconded to Unit (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), a top secret army under the command of Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (memorably played by Nicholas Courtney) who defended the earth against invasion from Sea Devils, the Autons and the Master. After saving the earth from destruction a few times, the Doctor did win his freedom back from the grateful Time Lords, leaving the stage for Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor.

Jon is the father of Sean Pertwee, who has had a long career as a character actor. He is probably best known for his recurring role on Cadfael.
