Doctor Who: The Patrick Troughton Years

Former Shakespearean actor Patrick Troughton brought a more off-beat and comedic quality to the part, playing the Doctor as a cosmic hobo, scruffily dressed in an old frock coat and baggy checked trousers, with a penchant for piaying the recorder.

Troughton's era is synonymous with monsters - Daleks, the Yeti, Ice Warriors and the Cybermen - and for the first time we learned something of the Doctor's origins, that he was a renegade Time Lord who stole his time machine, the Tardis, to gallivant around the universe. Captured and put on trial by the Time Lords, he is exiled to Earth and undergoes regeneration once more.

With tragic irony Troughton was to collapse and die while attending an American Doctor Who fans' convention in 1987.
