Commissioned by the BBC in 1987 to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the painter L.S. Lowry, this BAFTA® award-winning dramatic ballet celebrates the life and work of a truly unique artist, whose work reflects the urban landscapes of the north and the“Matchstick Men” who populated them. Born during the reign of Queen Victoria, and appointed Official Artist at the coronation of her great great- granddaughter, Elizabeth II, Lowry was hardly “a simple man” from Lancashire. Created by Gillian Lynne, choreographer of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, with a score by Carl Davis (Pride and Prejudice, Cranford), this memorable production is danced by the Northern Ballet Theatre led by Royal Ballet stars Christopher Gable and Moira Shearer (The Red Shoes). Introduced by Albert Finney (My Uncle Silas) and never broadcast in the US, A Simple Man is remastered and includes recent interviews with Lynne and Davis. Dance, music, art and cinematography combine to create this inspirational delight.
