Feel both the sting of betrayal and the bliss of romance in this lovingly restored BBC treasure. Based on the 1859 novel by George Eliot, this moving tale of a love triangle in the English midlands destined for tragic results is one of the most passionate Masterpiece Theatre productions ever filmed. Humble carpenter Adam Bede (Iain Glen, Kidnapped,Wives and Daughters) competes with dashing squire Arthur Donnithorne (James Wilby, Foyle's War, Gosford Park) for the affections of beautiful dairymaid Hetty Sorrel (Patsy Kensit, Silas Marner, Lethal Weapon 2). Her choice of wealth and security over love and passion sets the stage for Adam's determined quest to win her back.
“Take this engrossing rural classic by George Eliot, add fine costumes and lavish photography and the result is a gripping romantic tragedy that doesn’t let up for a moment.” -Daily Mail
“Elegant detail was part of the power of director Giles Foster’s fine adaptation of Adam Bede. The hay fields and the horses glistened in careful composition like a Stubb’s landscape.” -Independent on Sunday
