Discussion of the play featuring Kenneth Branagh, Rupert Everett and Julian Mitchell
Scrapbook of posters, articles and photographs from the premiere and behind the scenes.
Like Guy Bennett, Rupert Everett attended
a British boys' school. Luckily for us, he was expelled, and
turned to acting at the Glasgow Citizen's Theatre.
In a shabby apartment in Moscow, an American journalist asks a retired spy why he betrayed his country and defected to the USSR fifty years ago. The answers take them back to 1932, where in the closed atmosphere of a British boys' school, young Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett) realizes that his attraction to his classmates is more than a passing phase.
There, in an environment permeated by desire and denial in the wake of a gay classmate's suicide, Bennett falls desperately in love with a younger student, James Harcourt (Cary Elwes), and is introduced to Marxism by Tommy Judd (Colin Firth), his most loyal friend.
But Bennett's openness about his politics and sexuality threatens his social ambitions and long-dreamed-of career as a diplomat. Terrorized and publically humiliated by the sadistic prefect Fowler, he finally finds a way to strike back.
