An Unearthly Child
Schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton become intrigued by one of their pupils, Susan Foreman, and visit her home address - a junkyard at 76 Totter's Lane - where they meet her grandfather, the Doctor. The Doctor and Susan are aliens who travel through time and space in their ship, the TARDIS, which looks like an ordinary police box but actually houses a huge gleaming control room. The TARDIS takes them all to a Palaeolithic landscape where they encounter a tribe that has lost the secret of fire.
The Daleks
The TARDIS has brought the travellers to the planet Skaro where they meet two indigenous races - the Daleks, malicious mutant creatures encased in armoured travel machines, and the Thals, beautiful humanoids with pacifist principles. They convince the Thals of the need to fight for their own survival. Joining forces with them and braving Skaro's many dangers, they launch a two-pronged attack on the Dalek city. The Daleks are all killed when, during the course of the fighting, their power supply is cut off.
The Edge Of Destruction
As they slowly recover from the shock of being thrown to the TARDIS floor, the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara all seem to be acting strangely. A number of unexplained events occur and suspicions are raised that some alien force may have entered the ship. The Doctor at one point even accuses Ian and Barbara of sabotage. It gradually dawns on the travellers that what they have been experiencing is an attempt by the TARDIS itself to warn them of something. The Doctor ultimately realises that the 'fast return' switch he used when leaving Skaro has stuck, and the ship has been plunging back to the beginning of time and its own destruction. Once the problem - a faulty spring - is corrected, the TARDIS returns to normal and the Doctor is forced to make some apologies.
1a) AN UNEARTHLY CHILD - Fifteen year old Susan Foreman is the Doctor's granddaughter who attends Coal Hill School in London. Two of her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, pay a visit to her home to investigate her background. However, "home" appears to be a police box, which is in fact a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), the Doctor's dimensionally transcendental spaceship, which plunges them all back to the Earth of 100,000 B.C. They are captured by a tribe which has lost the secret of fire. Two leaders, Kal and Za, are involved in a power struggle. Ian makes a fire for Za by rubbing two sticks together, but Za does not allow the time-travellers to leave as promised. By a clever trick, the Doctor and his companions escape to the TARDIS. (In this first story, the Doctor is very much the anti-hero, and is portrayed as a touchy, selfish old man.)
(1b) DALEKKS: THE DEAD PLANET - The TARDIS, now stuck in the shape of a police box because of its faulty chameleon circuit, arrives on the planet, Skaro, inhabited by the blond Thals and the evil Daleks, both survivors of centuries of neutronic wars. After generations of mutation, the Thals have become perfect human beings. The Daleks, who lost the use of arms, legs and bodies, are an evil intelligence housed in a protective metal casing. A Thal tells Susan that his race is starving, so she asks the Daleks to help, but they set a trap and the Thal leader, Temmosus, is killed. In a counterattack, the Daleks - powered by static electricity from their city floors - are defeated when the current is turned off, leaving them immobile.
(1c) THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION - In a desparate attempt to gain control of the faulty TARDIS's guidance system and return the two school teachers to London 1963, the Doctor decides to experiment with a new combination. There is a violent explosion and the TARDIS blacks out. Susan and Barbara are convinced that it is the work of an invisible alien force, but Ian rationalizes it as a technical fault. The irascible Doctor accuses the two teachers of sabotage; he suspects them of trying to blackmail him into returning them to Earth. Finally, even Susan begins to suspect Ian and Barbara. However, they eventually realize the halt has been caused by the ship's defense mechanism, which is also responsible for the psychological disturbaces the crew experienced. The TARDIS has resorted to these measures because the Fast Return Switch jammed and the space ship was on its way back to the very beginning of creation.
