In director John Schlesinger's acclaimed 1967 adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel, rakishly handsome Sergeant Troy (Terence Stamp, Valkyrie), repressed squire William Boldwood (Peter Finch, Network) and sheep farmer Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates, Gosford Park), all compete for the affections of a free spirit at a time when women's rights were severely restricted.
