While German air raids bring disaster to many Londoners at the beginning of World War II, they bring relief to Willie Beech, the nine-year-old son of an abusive mother. Evacuated to the countryside, Willie finds himself under the care of curmudgeonly but kind Tom Oakley, a reclusive widower played by the late John Thaw (Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC). As Tom offers Willie the affection and encouragement of a parent, old scars begin to heal for both of them. What to do, then, when Willie’s mother telegrams for him to come home?
