If the idyllic village of Little Weirwold looks
familiar, you may have seen it already in The Vicar of Dibley— also filmed in Turville, Buckinghamshire.
While German air raids bring disaster to
many Londoners at the beginning of World War II, they bring relief to
Willie Beech, the nine-year-old son of an abusive mother. Evacuated to
the countryside, Willie finds himself under the care of curmudgeonly but
kind Tom Oakley, a reclusive widower played by the late John Thaw
(Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC). As Tom offers Willie the affection and
encouragement of a parent, old scars begin to heal for both of them.
What to do, then, when Willie’s mother telegrams for him to come
home? A film your whole family will enjoy. As seen on
Masterpiece Theatre.
