Peter Lovesey wrote his first Sergeant
Cribb novel for a crime-writing competition. The
?1,000 prize was more than his teacher?s salary,
and his wife, Jax, encouraged him to try for it.
What Sergeant Cribb lacks in charisma he more than makes up for in dogged determination and an unwavering faith in hard, cold facts. The setting for this series of macabre mysteries is Victorian London, although much of it was filmed in gritty, modern-day Manchester. Novelist Peter Lovesey intentionally created Cribb and his equally single-minded sidekick, Constable Thackeray, to be the antithesis of traditional fictional detectives with potent personalities. Instead, atmosphere?what Lovesey calls "the counterpoise of teacups and terror, coziness and crime"?is all.
Includes the episodes: A Case of Spirits, Swing Swing Together, Wobble to Death, Invitation to a Dynamite Party, Mad Hatter?s Holiday and The Detective Wore Silk Drawers
