The Story of Painting
From cave painting to the present day, Giotto and Michaelangelo to C?zanne and Jackson Pollock, Sister Wendy visits the world's art galleries to tell the history of painting. Even the most familiar of paintings take on a vivid new lease of life when viewed through this art enthusiast's eyes.
Sister Wendy's Grand Tour
Before this series, Sister Wendy had
never been to Europe, so she was
naturally excited about the tour. Her
itinerary takes in Paris, Madrid,
Florence, Rome,Venice, St Petersburg,
Antwerp, Amsterdam,Vienna and
Berlin ? cities which house some of
the world?s finest art and greatest
architecture.
Sister Wendy was keen not just to see
the Prado and the Pompidou, but also
the homes of artists and the locations
which inspired their work. En route she
discovers Monet?s Giverny, C?zanne?s
Mont St Victoire, the mystical landscapes
of Titian and Giorgione, the Carmine
Monastery from which Fra Lippi
abducted a nun, the asylum in Madrid
which inspired Goya?s most emotive
work and the Au Lapin Caf? in Paris,
Picasso?s bohemian drinking den.
It is not only old masters that interest
her, Sister Wendy also meets live artists
from the contemporary art scene
whom she believes will become the
old masters of tomorrow.
Her observations are sometimes
shocking and candid, sometimes
poignant and emotional. She hopes to
bring art to the masses the way
Pavarotti did with opera: ?So many
people are frightened of art,? she says,
?but they shouldn?t be.Art is a
window into something greater than
yourself, a way of enriching your life
through someone else?s experiences.?
Sister Wendy's Odyssey
In this series, Sister Wendy visits the
Walker Gallery in Liverpool, the
Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the
Ashmolean in Oxford, Wilton House in
Wiltshire, the Barber Institute in
Birmingham and the National Gallery
of Scotland. Here she discovers some
of Britain?s greatest art treasures,
including works by Hockney, Spencer,
Poussin, Guercino,Van Dyck and a
Rembrandt forgery.
C?zanne?s Enl?vement,Titian?s Rape of
Lucretia and Lippi?s Joakim and Anna are
just a few of the paintings which catch
her eye. Most of her knowledge has
come from studying postcards and
books; before the real thing, she often
becomes quite emotional: ?If I
sometimes get carried away, it?s
because art excites me beyond words.
When I look at my favourite art, I feel
an exhilaration, a joy.?
No prude, Sister Wendy discusses
nudity and sensuality with an openness
and innocence that is disarming, and
occasionally surprising. Her views are
refreshing and original and explained
with extraordinary lucidity.
El Greco?s Fabula, for example, a
picture which has baffled art historians
for centuries, she believes depicts
?youth encountering the whole
wonderful world of sexual adventure
in its portrayal of a young man blowing
on the embers?, while the man laughing
inanely is a symbol of misused passion,
and the monkey suggests ?unpredictability,
the danger that passion can lead you
into, animality out of control.?
Her delight is certainly infectious, her
sense of humour unexpected, her
insights fascinating and her fund of
stories seemingly inexhaustible.
