Bill Masen (Duttine - Out of the Blue) is in
a London hospital recovering from an
operation to restore his sight. He works at
a triffid-oil processing farm and was blinded
when one of them stung him.It is the night
before his bandages are due to come off
and he is missing the fantastic comet
display, a once-in-a-lifetime event.The
whole world is watching it, but him.
The next day the hospital is strangely silent.
No one is about. No one answers his call.
No one comes to remove his bandages,so
he does it himself - to find that, though he
can now see, no one else can.
As panic sets in,lawlessness and mob rule
take over. Masen rescues a sighted young
woman,Jo Payton (Emma Relph - The
Witches),from a street gang who need
sighted slaves to survive. And there is
another, more sinister development.Triffids
- monstrous,alien,carnivorous plants -
have moved upon the capital and are
slaughtering the population with their lethal
sting and herding the rest - for what?
It's obvious that London has become too
dangerous to remain. But Bill and Jo's
departure is delayed when Jack Coker
(Maurice Colbourne - Howards Way),
who is helping the sightless at the
University, forces Bill to go foraging for
food. He escapes, and later returns - to
find the University abandoned.
Bill's search for Jo takes him into the
country, where triffids are now in control.
Eventually, he tracks her down to a
farmhouse community in the country.
