Shocked to discover that their late and supposedly respectable father has left huge gambling debts and a mistress, Beatrice and Evangeline Eliott's genteel
life falls apart at the seams. Forced by poverty to look for work, 30-year-old Beatrice finds a position with society photographer Jack Maddox (Aden Gillett). Cousin Arthur (Peter Birch) is now 18-year old Evangeline's legal guardian, and he and his mother Lady Lydia (Barbara Jefford) decide she should do a little sewing until she is married off.
At a society party, Beatrice and Evie's outfits gain many admiring glances. When they reveal that they made them themselves, they receive a few private commissions. Working in a variety of fashion establishments, their flair wins them recognition and orders from wealthy and influential customers.They decide to go it alone.
Their first collection is a triumph.
