Kitty (Naomi Watts, King Kong, 21 Grams) enters into a convenient marriage to studious bacteriologist Dr. Walter Fane, played by Oscar?- and BAFTA?-nominated Edward Norton (The Illusionist, Fight Club), who subsequently moves the couple to Shanghai. There, Walter is engrossed in his work, while Kitty embarks on an affair with the dashing diplomat Charlie Townsend, played by Emmy?- and Golden Globe?-nominated Liev Schreiber (The Omen, The Manchurian Candidate). An ultimatum in the form of a cholera epidemic deep in rural China forces the couple to seek a cure?for the disease as well as their marriage.
