This Sporting Life

Richard Harris (Gladiator, Harry Potter films) earned the Best Actor award at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of Frank Machin, an ultra-tough grizzled coal miner whose talent and tenacity earn him star status on his Northern England rugby league. When the macho Machin takes up residence with Margaret Hammond, his impulsive and angry personality stunts his life away from the pitch. Can success help Frank move past his earthy roots, or will it cause his ultimate demise? In addition to Harris, you'll also love a triumphant turn by Rachel Roberts (When a Stranger Calls, Murder on the Orient Express) as Margaret, in the role that earned her a 1964 BAFTA® Award as Best British Actress. And look for William Hartnell, in the role that led to his casting as the first Doctor Who.
