Series 1
As beneficiary of Grantleigh Manor, the snobbish Lady fforbes-Hamilton becomes a happy widower upon the death of her husband. But in the face of her late husband's creditors, bank, and the government, she can no longer afford to maintain the family's hold on the estate. Reluctantly, she sees it auctioned to Richard DeVere (formerly Bedrich Polouvicka), a millionaire bachelor of Czechoslovakian extraction who runs a multinational grocery business. With his mother he wastes no time in moving into the Manor. Audrey is annoyed at her new position on the estate, and she is forced to move, with butler, to the Manor lodge. DeVere represents everything Audrey regards as bad taste. Their differences of background, breeding and behavior are at once infuriating and endearing.

Series 2
The further adventures of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, the outrageous but likeable snob who has fallen on hard times. Despite her amazing snobbery and her assertion that wealth and civilized charm are simply not sufficient to warrant respect and a place at the manor, Audrey soon reveals that she is not above some less-than-ladylike chicanery to score a point in the class war. However, the devious and urbane Richard DeVere is an equal match for Audrey, and their complicated relationship leads to some uproarious escapades...

Series 3
In Series Three, Audrey's zeal for preserving hallowed traditions involve her in assorted crises, including building a new scouts' hall, saving the local railway station from closure and finding her own way to make changes in the Grantleigh estate.

Silver Wedding Anniversary
25 years after their hugely popular love-hate relationship was finally resolved in marriage, we revisit the happy couple for a one-off special as they prepare to celebrate their Silver wedding anniversary. Aristocratic Audrey has resumed her imperious command over the estate, the farms, and the neighbourhood, while dashing self-made businessman Richard has, to all appearances, settled down to the life of the definitive gentleman farmer. While Audreys old social circle have all been bought up by the big food syndicates and fled, they are proud survivors. The scene is set for a grand party, until an extraordinary confession gets in the way... With the help of her long-suffering school friend Marjory, a fearless Audrey goes into battle to defend a community, safeguard 400 years of history and save her marriage.
