New Type R vs the Stig
We finally get a chance to drive the new Type R this month. And by 'we', we mean the Stig. Britain's most famous unknown racing driver rates every hot hatch on sale too, including the Focus ST, Leon Cupra, Golf GTi Edition 30 and Megane R26.
It;s not the only comparison in thsi month's issue. Paul Horrell and JAson BArlow test Audi's new R8 against its sibling, The Lambo Gallardo.
Drives
Fat's Stilo wasn't exactly loved. In fact, most people really disliked it. But this month we've driven its replacement, The Bravo (the car which, ironically, the Stilo replaced) and things are looking up. Not least in the Styling.
Elsewhere, a couple of Yank tanks have been testes, the Hummer H3 and Cadillac Escalade, along with the facelifted Porsche Cayenne and new BMW 3-series Convertible.
TG2
Our long-term fleet has been depleted this month, as we return the Golf GTI and Mazda MX-5 to their makers.
There's another car disappearing this month, the Toyota MR2. the curvy roadster is coming to the end of its life on Britain's roads - we reveal why you should think about buying a second-hand one and what to watch out for.
Broadcaster and writer, Jeremy Charles Robert Clarkson was born on April 11, 1960 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, UK.
As a pre-pubescent youth, Clarkson played the role of a public schoolboy, J.C.T. Jennings, in a BBC radio Children's Hour serial adaptation of Anthony Buckeridge's Jennings novels until his voice broke.
His first job was as a travelling salesman for his parents' business selling Paddington Bear toys, after which he trained as a journalist with the Rotherham Advertiser
He writes weekly columns for The Sunday Times and The Sun, but is better known for his role on the BBC TV show Top Gear, which won an International Emmy in 2005, and Clarkson himself has won the 2007 National Television Awards' Special Recognition Award. He and James May were the first people to reach the magnetic North Pole in a car, which was broadcast in a Top Gear special on 25 July 2007 on BBC Two.
In 1993 he married his agent/manager Frances Catherine Cain and they now have three children: Emily, Finlo and Katya (born August 1994, March 1996, and November 1998.)
In spite of his penchant for fast driving and high performance cars, Clarkson has been reported as having a clean licence. He has owned a Ferrari 355 Spyder, a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG and currently has a SLK55 AMG. Between 1999 and 2001 he hosted Clarkson's Car Years and between 1995 and 1996 the Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld.
The Stig's name derives from presenter Jeremy Clarkson's days at Repton School; where, according to Clarkson, new students were always called "Stig".
The Stig's fastest official lap time around the Top Gear test track was 1 minute 17.3 seconds in an Ascari A10. Faster times had previously been posted in a Renault F1 car (0.59.0), an Aston Martin DBR9 (1.08.6) and a Caparo T1 (1:10.6), but none of these were deemed street-practical due to inability to navigate regulation UK speed bumps, or because they cannot be purchased by the public.
